Thinking of bringing your boat or Kayak to Kosi Bay?
Here is a few reminders of the rules and regulations to launch Boats on the Kosi Bay Lake system and surrounded area.
In accordance with SAMSA regulations only people with valid sheltered waters skippers’ tickets may launch their SAMSA registered boats on the Lake system.
The launch register at the launch site must be completed.
Boat engine size:
No engines allowed smaller than 15Hp
Launching fees are payable at Ezemvelo Parksboard:
Boat Fees:
- Boat registration – R90-00 (Valid for 1 year) R100.00
- Boat Launching Fee – R25-00
- Boat Storage – R25-00 per day (all trailers to be taken out)
Boat Launching Requirements:
- Valid Skippers Licences and Buoyancy Certificate
- Fishing Licence can be obtained from any Post Office
Night Time Fishing Permits:
- Prior arrangement needs to be made at Ezemvelo Kosi Bay Camp Office
- 18h00 – 6h00 – R130 per person
- 18h00 – 22h00 R100-00 per person
Canoes, kayaks or sailing powered crafts are NOT permitted on the Kosi Lakes due to the presence of hippo and crocodile. (there are limited registered tour guides with concessions that have permission to use Kayaks and Canoes on the Lakes & Estuary).
Jet-skis, aqua pods or hovercraft may not be launched on the Lake system.
Boats are to please give hippos enough space not to feel threatened.
Local providers have licensed concessions to run Kayak Tours on the Kosi Bay Estuary.
Mthando chanel
This channel links Nhlange (3rdLake) and Mpungwini (2nd Lake) and is a critical feature of the Kosi Bay Lake system. Speeding in this channel is therefore a serious offence, please travel dead slow
It should take at least 20min to pass through this channel and remember to keep to the right-hand side at all times.
Lake Sibaya
No vessels may be launched on Lake Sibaya.
Kite surfing and driving along the edge of the Lake is strictly prohibited.
Safety:
Please keep your valuable possessions safely in your camp. Remove all your equipment from your boat when not in use.
Launching of Boats onto the sea:
Kosi bay area is part of the Maputaland Marine protected area.
In accordance with the Marine living resources Act, no vessel, including fishing skis, canoes or kayaks may be launched in the Maputaland Marine protected area.
The closest approved launch site for private vessels is Sodwana Bay.
