Witness an Ancient Miracle on the Shores of Kosi Bay
Imagine standing on a pristine, protected beach under a canopy of stars, watching a giant of the deep ocean haul itself ashore to perform an ancient, life-giving ritual. This is not a documentary; this is the profound and moving experience of a Kosi Bay Turtle Tour.
The beaches of Kosi Bay are the most important nesting grounds for two of the world’s most incredible marine reptiles. Every year, these ancient mariners return to the very beaches where they were born to lay their eggs.
Our guided, ethical turtle tours offer you a front-row seat to one of nature’s most phenomenal events.
Meet the Giants of Kosi Bay. The protected coastline of Kosi Bay is a critical sanctuary for two specific species of sea turtle:
The Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta): The more common (but no less magical) of our visitors. Female Loggerheads, weighing up to 150kg, will drag themselves up the beach to dig a deep, flask-shaped nest above the high-tide line, where they deposit over 100 eggs.
The Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea): The ultimate prize for any wildlife enthusiast. Leatherbacks are the largest turtle species on Earth, weighing up to 900kg and measuring nearly 2 metres long. These are true ocean-going dinosaurs, and seeing one on the beach is a rare and unforgettable privilege.
When to Visit: The Two Turtle Seasons
Timing is everything. The Kosi Bay turtle season is split into two distinct, equally amazing periods.
Nesting Season (November to January): This is the prime time to see the large female turtles. You will witness the entire, laborious process: the female emerging from the surf, the slow trek up the beach, the hypnotic digging of the nest with her hind flippers, and the gentle laying of her eggs before she returns to the sea.
Hatching Season (January to March): This is the season of new life. You’ll have the chance to see clutches of tiny turtle hatchlings (each about the size of a matchbox) erupting from their sandy nests and making the brave, frantic dash to the ocean, navigating a gauntlet of predators.
How Your Turtle Tour Works
- Our ethical, non-invasive tours are designed to protect the turtles and support conservation.
- Meet Your Guide: Your tour begins just after sunset, where you’ll meet your experienced local guide.
- 4×4 Beach Access: We transport you by licensed 4×4 to the remote, protected nesting beaches. (Note: No vehicles are permitted on the beaches to protect the nests).
- Guided Night Walk: Using only special red-filtered lights to avoid disturbance, your guide will lead you on a walk along the shore to find a nesting turtle.
- Respectful Viewing: You will keep a quiet distance until the female has begun laying her eggs. Once she is in a “trance,” your guide will allow you to approach respectfully to watch her.
Our Conservation Promise: We partner with community guides and follow strict ethical rules. This means no white lights, no flash photography, and the turtles’ welfare is always our number one priority.
